About Nicola
Nicola has considerable and varied experience in the birth process, including:-
- V Bac (vaginal birth after a cesarean section)
- Water Births
- Home Births
- Hospital Births
I have always been passionate about birth, even before my own children were born, and trained as a breast feeding counsellor when they were still small.
As they grew up I decided that I wanted to become more involved and embarked on a birth doula course with Michel Odent in 1999.
I have been working as a birth/postnatal doula since, during which time I have supported many couples at home and in hospital.
My aim as a birth doula is to help couples achieve the best possible outcome for them and their babies and to support their preferences at all times.
In order to widen my horizons during the time that I have been working as a doula I have taken courses in hypnobirthing and baby massage and attended a Preparing to Teach in the Life Long Learning Sector (PTTLS) exam, with a view to eventually teaching ante natal classes.
I have also been present at many workshops, notably with Ina May Gaskin, author of ‘Spiritual Midwifery, and Penny Simkin, and a water birth study day with Dianne Garland.
I have experienced three very different births myself, two in hospital and one at home and became fascinated with the role of woman at birth many years ago, when I was present at the birth of my nephew at home, this started me on the path to becoming a doula, although it wasn’t until many years later that the profession was recognised as such.
I am the mother of three grown up children, and am hoping to become a grandmother in the not too distant future!
Having been privileged to be present at over 70 births in the last 11 years I am amazed that I learn something new on every occasion, and hopefully will continue to do so for many more years.
